Options
Selecting ‘Options’ in the Main Menu will bring up the
Options Menu. This allows you to alter some of
the parameters within the program. To return to the Main Menu, select ‘Return to Main Menu’ option, or
press the ESC key. The Options Menu has the following commands:
Change Level Set: This is used to select a
different level set.
This option will only be present if you
have installed additional level sets.
Change Player: This option is used to change to a
different player
file or to create a new player file.
Change Language: This option allows you to change the language used for the game.
Sound Volume: Adjusts the volume of sound effects. The value can range from ‘0’ (off) to ‘5’
(loud).
To change this value, select the button (using either the mouse or the up/down arrow keys), then change
the value by clicking on the right or left arrow keys.
Sound Type: This option allows you to change the drivers used to play sound effects. Most people will
not change this value. However, if you are experiencing difficulties with the sounds in the game, try
changing this selection. The possible values are DirectSound5, DirectSound3, Windows, and None.
Music Volume: This value can be set to ‘On’ or ‘Off’. To change this value, select the button
(using
either the mouse or the up/down arrow keys), then change the value by clicking on the right or left
arrow keys.
Music Type: This option allows you to change the drivers used to play the music (songs). Most
people
will not change this value. However, if you are experiencing difficulties with the music in the game,
try changing this selection. The possible values are DirectMusic, CD, Win32s, and None.
Screen Size: This control selects the size of the window used to play Mad Scientist. Most people play
the game in full-screen mode, so the default value for this selection matches the display mode for your
computer’s screen (for example, 1024 x 768). If you select a size smaller than your computer screen’s
mode, Mad Scientist will play in a window of the selected size. If you select a size that is larger
than your computer screen’s mode, the game will simply play full-screen.
Graphics Type: This option allows you to change the drivers used to display graphics. The possible
choices are WinG, Windows, and DirectX. Some users of Windows XP report problems with Microsoft’s
implementation of DirectX.
WinG.
Video: This control allows you to turn on or off the display of our opening video. Note that for some
display sizes and for some versions of the operating system, the movie will not play correctly. If you
are experiencing difficulties with the opening movie, simply select ‘Off’.
Game Status: Selecting this option brings up a status window showing which version of the program you
are running, the graphics option chosen for your machine, and the current music option. Clicking the
left mouse button will return you to the Options Menu.
Return to Main Menu: Choosing this option will
return you to the Main Menu.
Command Line Options
The sound/music/graphic drivers are automatically chosen to be the best your computer can support. If
you experience problems, you can add command-line flags to force a particular driver. Alternatively, the
MSConfig.exe program can be used to graphically change these options.
To add command-flags, right-click on the Mad Scientist shortcut. Select ‘properties’ in the pop-up
window, click the ‘shortcut’ tab, then edit the ‘target’ string. Add one or more of the following flags
to the end of that string. If you run Mad Scientist from the Start Menu, you can find the properties
window by right-clicking the tool bar, selecting ‘Properties’, clicking the ‘Startup Menu Programs’ tab,
then clicking the ‘Advanced’ button. Search through the browser for Mad Scientist, then right-click on
that entry. From there, select ‘Properties’, click the ‘Shortcut’ tab, then edit the ‘Target’ string.
To run MSConfig.exe, find the program in your Mad Scientist installation directory, which is usually
located at:
C:\Program Files\Core Concepts\Mad Scientist
When the program runs, the first screen has buttons for running the game, changing the language,
changing the configuration of the game (the options), or connecting to our web-site. If you click on
‘Configure’ you will be shown the configuration screen. Here each of the game options are displayed,
along with their current settings. Click on the right or left arrows to change the options. Once you
have set the options using MSConfig.exe, the game will always run with those options until they are
changed either using the Options screen in the game or using MSConfig.exe.
The following list describes the various command line switches and configuration options.
Sound: Mad Scientist first tries to use DirectSound. If that does not work, it tries to use Windows
sounds, and if that fails, then sounds are disabled. These flags force selection of Windows sounds or
no sounds:
/winsound use Windows sound effects.
/nosound disable sound effects
Music: Mad Scientist tries to play music from the CD. If the CD is not present, it plays MIDI music. The
program tries using DirectMusic, and if that doesn’t work will try Windows music. If none of these work,
music is disabled. These flags force selection of the music mode:
/cdmusic plays background music from the CD.
/dmusic use DirectMusic.
/winmusic use Windows music.
/nomusic disables music
Video: Mad Scientist uses your current screen resolution when the game starts. You can force it to use
another resolution with the following flags:
/1280 1280 x 1024
/1152 1152 x 864
/1024 1024 x 768
/800 800 x 600
/640 640 x480
Movie: When Igor's Adventures With The Mad Scientist starts, it displays the Core Concepts
opening video. You can disable the
movie using the following switch:
/novideo
